oh gosh, thanks! DH and I were dreading rebuilding the raised beds we made a few years ago with free lumber. These had done wonderfully, yet sadly are decaying. I will now search out free cinder blocks to replace the timber, and either fill the blocks with rubble and cap with solid blocks, or fill with soil and mints. Oooh yeah!

I have one bed made from half-blocks, with the blocks standing on their sides, lengthwise. It's not high, by no means...but it works.

My raised beds are but 10" high, and that's plenty.

They were started because the ground where the garden could go was covered with stones, from the former owner's dog kennel/yard. Serious rototilling and screening was not getting enough of the rocks out, so stern measures were called for.

But 10" has been more than enough.
