As I came down my back staircase, I saw something on the windowsill. A large moth perhaps?? No, it was a hummer! I was afraid it was hurt. Rounded up all my pets and went to catch the bird. It didn't struggle and when I carried it out on the deck it flew like crazy for the woods! I couldn't believe I held a hummingbird! I was so happy it was all right!

What a wonderful experience. Hummers often get close to people but I always thought it was because they are so agile they know they can't be caught.

Hummers are my fave bird. That is so cool that you got to hold one. 2 of them were playing in our yard and whizzed past our faces. I have a hummer feeder and I am trying to get some flowers that hummers love :)

Hypno, I always try to plant flowers the hummers will love. I have trumpet vine, fuscia, etc. etc. Guess what I saw them on the other day- impatients (sp). The best laid plans and all that! Nature has it all figured out! It really was a gift to actually touch and hold a hummingbird. I am so glad it was okay!

There's something almost magical about a hummingbird. It's as though they were just visiting from some fairy tale land.

I couldn't agree more, Hoodat! They really are magical. Unfortunately, I have yet to see a male this year. I am hoping he just hasn't come to the feeder...To imagine that you and I see the same hummingbirds during different seasons, is almost unbelievable! How such a small creature can make such a long journey- is magical! PBS had a special on hummers that was great. The camera's were able to catch them in amazing ways- here in the snowy north, we only see ruby throats, but there are a bunch of neat ones all over the world!

We're fortunate in this little corner of the US. We have the Ana's hummingbird, the only place in the country where a hummer stays year round.
