Your mom does beautiful work Lavender, what a sweetheart!
I never picked up on any of those finer skills, though I was instructed in knitting and crochet, my grandma was a great knitter and seamstress, and my mom was very creative with fabric and crafts.
My fine motor skills are limited to shovels and rakes unfortunately.

Mom likes to crochet more than knit. She made bedspreads for all my kids and countless afghans. All I know about the difference is, you use different needles/hooks.
I'm sure someone else can give you a better answer.
