One method of storing dahlia tubers over the winter is to trench them.
Dig a hole or trench deep enough that it's below the frost line, put your tubers in, cover with leaves and then soil. cover the spot with something to keep the rain from soaking in from the top, they'll get a bit of moisture from the sides. When I've done this when dug in the spring the tubers looked better than when they were buried.

Bought 2 bags of peat moss, yesterday.

Self-loaded and can drop out of pickup, with luck, directly onto handtruck. Cart to carport and drop on pallet ...

They always seem to be soaked in water because of the weight (60 - 75#, online info) until I can get them open and feel the peat with my hands. Sometimes, they are soaked! No waterlogged peat for storing roots.
