There are two HL walking sticks at one of my jobs. One gets full sun, southern exposure on a stone terrace bed, and the other is just a baby that only gets morning sun. They are both healthy. Oh, yeah, there is also a red one I planted for another client that has turned green because it's not in the sun long enough.
IMO the red ones don't have as much of that "aphidy" look as the green ones, which is what bugs me the most about the shrubs. But they look spectacular in the winter when the contorted branches are all exposed.

If I planted one I wouldn't care if it died, I would keep it in the ground for it's
unique branches. :D

I like to keep them pruned up enough to expose the trunk and branches, so it's not all hidden by that terrible foliage.

Successful growing them in south-est, central-est Wisconsin. Had one that reached 10 feet wide by 8 feet high. They are very brittle and will have branches break off relatively easily, but the do make great winter interest.
