Do You Have A Fire Extinguisher In Kitchen?

I learned it is a very good idea to have a fire extinguisher in kitchen. Going to pick a few up Kitchen, storage room, utility room and outside shed. Do you keep fire extinguishers handy ?

I have one installed at each apartment I own, but at home? Only one that's past working.

I have a little one at each end of the barn... but not sure if the one that came with the house (mounted on the wall in the kitchen) is any good...

Yep, we have one mounted in the stairwell just outside our kitchen door. I also keep a box of baking powder in the cupboard above the electric range. We have a free standing Jen Air grill right beside the stove, baking soda kept handy in case of a flare up.

lets see have...
2 5lbs abc at each end of the house
2 20 lbs abc in the pantry
1 5 lbs abc in the barn
2 5 lbs abc in the truck
2 2.5lbs abc in the both of our bedrooms

yes a wee bit over kill but they were free..... un-serviceable from work.<when i say that they have reached their life span>

but. they are still good for a one time use ...

There are 2 under the kitchen sink. I have no reason to think that they wouldn't work but they are aerosol spray cans and about 20 years old.

At a previous home, I turned on the kitchen stove to boil water in the kettle. Turned the wrong knob and instead, I had on the burner under the stir-fry pan I'd just used to cook lunch. Set fire to the oil in there! It wasn't much of a problem but I realized that things could have been much, much worse!

I haven't accidentally started a fire anyplace since. Perhaps, I should test one and just plan on replacing that can. Home Depot has them for $12.61.

while fire was burning we had argument about throwing water on electrical fire. I thought it was grease fire you couldnt throw water on. Lucky my nephew turned off power at fuse box before I dumped water on fire.

heres some things have learned over the years.... not all abc fire extinguishers are the same...
the ones you can buy from the box stores that have a plastic handle are non rechargeable.

we had to replace 20 of them down at work that were at work when we bought the building< we have 75 fire extinguishers> the plastic handle ones will keep leaking after the handle is pulled...

the metal handle fire extinguishers are rechargeable. and are required by certain insurance company policy's, home/rentals/business.

older ones do not have painted handles

if you are a business or a rental property owner best you keep records of a monthly of inspection of that fire extinguisher and have them inspected yearly....

if you work for someone that has abc fire extinguishers that are not serviceable any more. ask if you can have them. they are still good as long as you see this.
the gauge needle is still in the green, it means it's still fully charged.. and ready to extinguish a fire....
this one was hit it's serviceable life back in 2004 it's now 2016 and is still ready to put out a fire.....

weather your a homeowner or business while doing your monthly inspection you need to remove the fire extinguisher turn it upside down and tap on the bottom and side with a rubber hammer. this will make sure that the powder inside is loss and will extinguish correctly...

also know how to use them/ employees/ tenants

as the safety director down at work it's best to
get out of the building
get yourself to a safe place
call 911

a fire extinguisher is used for a local fire after that, that's what the fire department is for....know your limits...
