I always look forward to these. My trouble is I like them so much they don't usually make it from the garden to the kitchen without being gobbled. This year I decided to plant the big ones. That's a 6 foot plus trellis. If they keep going up I'll need a step ladder to pick.
There are some peas in the second pic but you have to look close to see them.

Those look great! As mild as the weather has been here I could have had some this fall, but they worked really well as an early spring planting this past year so I'll try that again. -Wendy

Wow, those are on steroids! They look fabulous! I have not planted the climbing type- so mine didn't look anywhere near that impressive! They are delicious though. I did manage to get a few upstairs and into the pot, but they make for great garden snacking!

That is impressive hoodat! I still have a few in my garden, but they sure don't look like yours. I didn't trellis mine so they were in the mud and I didn't get any peas - blooms but no peas. I did give most of them to the chickens - they loved them of course.

Hoodat! I am soooooooooooo jealous of your climate. It will be February before I get anything into the ground... assuming it stays mild this year.

Wouldn't you like to shake Dr. Calvin Lamborn's hand for developing that snap pea :)?!?

I suppose that Dr. Lamborn has retired from Gallatin Valley Seed in southern Idaho. Here is an old People magazine article that I just found online about the introduction of sugar snap peas! April 16, 1979 (click)

Here is Fedco Seed's story about Dr. Lamborn (click). He also brought us the Kentucky Blue pole bean.

I try to have a little claim on Dr. Lamborn because he did his work in Idaho ;). It didn't take me ttoooo long to get around to trying a snap pea - probably began wondering why I was eating snow pea pods at the Chinese restaurants and not risking something in/from my own backyard . I suppose that it was about 5 years. Can't rush into anything like that, ya know!

I often grow both when I have the room to spare. Sugar snaps are great in salad but they just aren't right for Chibese cooking. Of course you can pick them before the pods develop peas but the snow peas give a bigger harvest on immature pods.

I planted some this last fall, and they did really, really well and were growing like mad.... until the chickens got over the fence into the garden and ate the whole bloody lot. :barnie

WOW!:th
I can hardly believe it! :ep

I have at least 2 months till I am crunching peas.

Anyone here ever make it indoors with any? Between my kids and I there is never enough!

Every time my rabbits see me near the pea trellis they all run to the front of the cages and start scratching on the wire begging for peas.
