found an old rose bush

Found an old rose bush on our property. The house on the property was built in 1862. I am not sure how long the rose bush has been here. I would like to transplant it closer to the house or barn. When do you think would be the best time to move it?

Great find! Is it flowering? What does it look like?

IME, it's been best to move roses in the early spring/late winter right before they start to put on growth for the new season.

I usually move them and wait to cut any dead or winter damaged branches until after they have been transplanted.

Maybe instead of transplanting it, you could take a couple of cuttings and root them for more of the same rose. That way you would have some lovely old rose close to your house, and wouldn't have to disturb the rose that has lived where it is for quite a while.

we have a batch of woods in the far left corner of our property. It's been there for a while and I don't think it's flowered for quite some time, that's why I was going to transplant it so it could get full sun.

So what did you decide to do with the old rose bush?? I am new to this site and was reviewing older questions this morning!

If this were my find, I would wait until dormancy to move it and then would do so very carefully to ensure damaging the mother plant the least, treating it like you would a bare root planting from the nursery.

Hope you waited until it was dormant to move it. That would be the best thing to do. Please let us know how it turns out and what the rose looks like.

I found an old fashion rose bush at a house my husband is tearing down. I cut it back and plan to dig it up and transplant it in my yard.

Replanted the rose bush in another area of the yard and it is doing better than I thought . It is bigger and I can't wait to see how it blooms. Has it been that long since I posted this?

I hope it's worth the effort - with all the multiflora roses around here I'd want to see the blooms before I went to the trouble of moving it - just saying, I'd hate to move one of those weedy roses!
