Some of that might well be true. I have said many times that I hate the hoe. I am happier to use other tools. And, growing in beds means I can sit in the path and weed by hand.

Still, field work on our farm meant tending irrigation and haying. Food for the cows. You had to play those roles for their benefit. Later, you could watch them enjoy the products of your efforts.

My grandmother no longer had her children to feed by the time I knew her. The vegetable garden was mostly off limits to a 4 year old. Her flower gardens were nearer the house and my play area.
