Some mushrooms glow in the dark ... is this true ? a GMO ? , or April Fool ? :hu Well ... It's TRUE ! :ep At least 70 species of fungi, all of them gilled mushrooms from the order Agaricales and each from one of four evolutionary lineages, have some kind of bioluminescence or another. According to a study published in "Current Biology", mushrooms probably put on these evening light shows to attract insects so that they might carry their spores around. To test this, the researchers created fake mushrooms, baited with LED lights and rigged with sticky traps and put them in the same Brazilian forest as the real ones. As expected , many more insects ended up in the sticky tape traps than the control fake ones without the lights. So this study shows that by evolving a glow ability was in order to become a prime landing target to insects and other animals and follows that this evolutionary benefit helps in their spore distribution . :love
