Grandparent bragging

I know it depends on the herbs and spices and the skill of the maker, but some of the best sausage I ever ate was 1/3 pork, 1/3 beef, and 1/3 venison. I think sausage benefits from the fat in pork but it does not have to be limited to pork only.

Just stirring things up.

My uncle was a logger and was up in the mountains of northern California all the time. Hunting success for deer was a given and the bag limit was 2.

Auntie would turn an entire deer into mincemeat and can it. She had a source for beef suet and would use that as an ingredient - raisins, diced apples, spices, sugar ... I think that was about it.

Of course we would have mincemeat pie when visiting but mincemeat was also served as a side dish with other things. They didn't live too far away, about a 2 hour drive. Almost a guarantee that we would be served mincemeat. Sounds like a good idea on this dreary, cold November day - how about a bowl of soup and a serving of mincemeat?

We had our 3 granddaughters for the weekend. We sure enjoyed them. Their parents went to check out Oklahoma because DD has a possible job offer. Nope, we ain’t going to Oklahoma!

The little girls had fun with the sheep, feeding them corn.
