Greenhouse Tomatoes Attention Seedcorn!

I picked a big red tomato and a smaller yellow one from my redneck greenhouse this afternoon and we ate them sliced and salted, at supper. Deeee-licious.

Seedcorn, to make you feel better-the 16 degrees we got last week.......well let's just say that my redneck plastic wrapped greenhouse isn't made to withstand such low temps for days at a time...... The plants got burnt. I trimmed them up today, hope it helps, if not, them we'll be eating a lot of fried green tomatoes!

Bay, since I like to torture myself, I have to ask; were these tomato plants some you saved from the summer, or from seed planted in the fall, or ?

This past year was first time I had fried green tomatoes, didn't know what I was missing.

I bought some as plants for fall planting and I grew a few from seed. I hope they recover from the freeze. My bell pepper plants got burnt too, 1 red, 1 orange and 1 yellow-they are 3 years old.

Nyboy, you keep hanging out here and we will totally garden-corrupt you! When you grow something, especially if you have never eaten it, you just gotta try it. Sometimes you even like it! Glad you liked the fried green tomatoes! Do you like fried okra?

Cane, there's always okra in gumbo! And salted dehydrated okra makes a crunchy snack! But FRIED is the BEST!!

Tonight for supper we had butterbeans (frozen) from the garden, collard greens picked fresh, fried green tomatoes from the greenhouse, broccoli picked from the back yard, salad-all from the garden-lettuce, carrots, red bell pepper, tomato, (both from the greenhouse) green onions, and cornbread made with Daymon Morgan's Kentucky Butcher cornmeal, corn grown last summer.

Right now, DH and I are kicked back in our recliners, full as a dog tick.

It seems that my pore lil' redneck greenhouse just wasn't made for 16 degree weather, SNOWMEGGEDON, and ICELAND!!
I picked most of the tomatoes after the 16* freezes we had for a week. I trimmed up the tomato plants in a futile attempt to save them. I had my fingers crossed for the bell pepper plants, but the snow and ice have, I'm afraid, finished them off. WAH! The bell peppers would be 4 years old this spring.....sniff, sniff......WAH!!

My heart goes out to you, baymule. I've over wintered tomatoes and peppers for several years as well only to have them fall victim to late spring cold spells when my DH took over their safe home in my sun room.

After four years they would be just like family pets.
