So far I'm only growing the basic ones but I plan to get lots more!!! :celebrate

Here is the list,

sweet Italian large leaf basil
Lavender
dill
oregano
thyme
sweet marjoram
garlic and onion chives
rosemarry
aloe
sage
parsley
catnip
lemon grass
apple mint
spear mint
pepper mint
And I haven't got it just yet but I hope its coming soon!!
chocolate mint

In a small 3'x6' bed next to the house (and conveniently by the back door!) I've got:

Lavender (forget which kind, but it creeps instead of stands upright)
Mammoth Dill (still needs to sprout!)
Fernleaf Dill (volunteer seedlings from last year)
Cilantro (for salsa)
German Chamomile (which still needs to sprout)
Genovese Basil (having a hard time, for some reason)
Rosemary (new every year)
Common Sage (came back from last year and is growing like mad!)
"Mint" from a seed packet (dunno what kind)
Spearmint from a friend, all mint goes in pots!
Onion Chives (one growing between the concrete path slabs, 2 in the actual herb garden!)

I tried Mexican Tarragon last year and that was a total failure, I think it wasn't hot enough. I really hope the chamomile comes up and starts growing, I'd love to dry it and use it throughout the winter.

As for the rosemary, I'm happy if it's still alive come fall! Last year it grew very slowly and we didn't have nearly enough, so this year I planted two plants. Murphy's Law being what it is, of course now I'll have more rosemary than I know what to do with, LOL!

I am pleased with my sage, however, it's exploding in every direction and even this early in the season, it's at least three times as big now as it was when winter showed up last year. We'll have plenty to dry and keep.

My lavendar still isn't sprouted so I'll probably will be crossing it off the list.

I have never grown sage but I use it in the kitchen all year long. Looking at my book it is better to buy these as plants rather then trying to grow from seed. How many will I need in a kitchen type gaden?

One plant will be fine. Sage grows fast and huge and comes back every year if you don't get a bad winter.


I am so interested in all of your mint varieties. I have, what I think is, spearmint. It is dark green with a dark... purplish stem and is clump forming. I've been trying to root common mint from my mother's garden for 2 years for hubby's mojitos and I must be the only person in this world that is having this problem as everyone claims how invasive it is. I think Im trying to transplant in mid summer instead of ..now :/

variegated sage (just got from a lady selling plants on her porch.. also scored heirloom mators for 50 cents ea!)

I'm just getting started in this particular garden, and mind you, it is a Butterfly garden, but so far I have:

Oregano
Dill
Garlic Chives
Thyme
Fennel
Garlic
Echinacea
Sweet Basil

Our season hasn't even gotten going yet (May 15th is no-more-frost date), and I plan to add:

Sage
Lavender
Cilantro
Rosemary
Tarragon
Parsley

I think I'll be happy with those, oh! and I plan to grow hops also, although I don't know if that counts as an herb (?)

OK, I was looking in my garden book and Greek Oregano is also known as true oregano, Italian Oregano is actually a thyme that has the flavor of oregano. So I guess if you are worried about oregano going crazy and taking over your garden the thyme variety might be the way to go. The book calls it Italian Oregano Thyme: 10"; strong oregano taste and aroma; tender perennial.
