Hi, time to begin hilling the potato plants. Does anyone have a suggestion of what to use other than straight soil? Straw, hay, peatmoss, etc?? We usually have trouble finding enough garden soil to continue to "hill" all summer. thanks

I did mine just this morning, used some well-composted wood chips (from having poplar trees chipped up two years ago when they were taken down). OLD mulch hay or straw would work too.

I had used hay on mine and it did not work very well. I will try again but I read to make sure you add some soil on top because the hay alone allows to much air thru. I only had potatoes in the soil on the very bottom & not 1 in the hay, so I'll try layering next time. then again it was my first time ever growing potatoes and I may have messed it up. I was just happy to grow any. It was like finding gold for my 4 yr old.
