I am becoming a food snob!

Oh dont get me started on being "self sustaining" I'd LOVE to be able to live "off the grid" but the start up :( is very expensive. How do people think our ancestors lived??? Do they believe they had electric back in the 1700's ??? I think there is just too much technology today. I love having our own grapes, peaches, apples and such. It's awesome to me... dont have to rely on going to the grocery for these things. Cant wait to start processing our own veggies again... :D

I can't STAND store bought jams now. They taste light pure sugar/corn syrup. I have to do my own. I don't think we've spent a $1 on store bought jam in like 6 years.

Then there is fresh veggies... there are TONS I can't stand because they taste like nothing and I just disappointed. Green beans, carrots, tomatoes....ect. Of course that goes for store bought eggs as well.

Now I have an ice cream making and we're just going NUTS on how good that is, I'm sure we'll never buy the carton 'stuff' out of the freezer at the store again.

Food snobs unite!!! :)
I know what you mean about jelly and jam V. I have been making ours for awhile now and we can't go back to store bought. And if you want some recipes for that ice cream maker, just say the word. I just happen to have a few. Do you use the custard (egg) base? It's the only way to go!

Dew and I need a good cold cellar. The plans for the enw house do include one, if we can ever get it built.

I almost never eat jelly, being allergic to wheat (gluten really) there isn't much to put it on, so I am trying my hand at turning some of my fruit into wine. Gathering the supplies for it now.

We won't eat store bought eggs or tomatoes. :tongue What I grow is so much better. Funny that you mention jellies, store bought is full of corn syrup. :sick You even have to watch supposedly home made at farmer's markets, sometimes they slap a label on the jar, but read the small print--corn syrup! Blech. :tongue

It's the same thing for us, but living this far from town its a GOOD thing. I make all our breads, dairy products, can or freeze a lot of our veggies and we have the meatie and egg chickens, sheep and cattle. However, I still love peanutbutter cups :drool

Even the peanut butter cups aren't what they used to be. They used to be made of whole ground rasted peanuts but now they are extracting the oil and using the dry pulp instead of whole peanuts. It used to be fed to hogs. Also, if you don't read the label you are liable to be eating imitation chocolate.

Well Hoodat, you've just burst my bubble! I LOVE peanut butter cups. They've even changed my Cheetos. They are not as cheezy anymore. I think I'll stop buying them now and will be healthier for it. :/

Stubborn, you are right, store bought cookies are terrible! Well maybe except for Pepperidge Farms chessman cookies?

Mary

I could write a pretty long list too, but two things in particular that I prefer homemade/raised is yogurt (much cheaper and much healthier for you!) and chicken...I just can't bring myself to eat a store-bought chicken anymore. When I run out of our own, I just don't eat chicken...
