I'm a rather lazy gardener but a little more persistent when it comes to be a good steward of our land. We cleared about a 1/4 along the creek of honeysuckle so far this year and I want to be very selective about what grows in its place. I'm pulling all the new honeysuckle, garlic mustard, poison ivy, and stinging nettle. What about this thing? Can you tell me what it is? It seems pretty invasive. TIA

:welcome, hennyjenny! I think you'll discover that we are like-minded regarding stewardship, plus everybody's really friendly here!!

At first, I thought it might be maple seedlings--I found a great site for tree IDing below~

Maybe it's a fern? Dunno, but obviously it's a shade, foresty type of plant that was being shielded by the honeysuckle you pulled up.

Hi hennyjenny, :welcome

Can you tell us more about where you live? That would help narrow it down some. I see a few other plants in your picture that I am familiar with, but I don't recall seeing this one around and I'm out in the woods a lot!

It is neither maple nor fern, I will bet you all five of my new sheep on it.

I don't recognize what it IS, though.

Where do you live? That would help, to know what the possibilities are...

I am in northcentral Indiana in a wooded valley along a creek. There are areas along the lane that are almost 100% this weed, with just a little poison ivy sneaking in.

I am at a loss.

When I saw it, my first thought was Echinops.

Doesn't seem to be right and there are not enuf species in North America to fit this one in.

Steve

edited to add: foliage of Echinops

Does this one produce any berries?!?!

I think the one I have that is similar produces dark purple/blue berries in a grape type fashion (clusters)?

Oh well, I guess I don't need to know what it is to pull it out. ;)

Does it get yellow thistle-like flowers in summer? I want to say, yellow sow-thistle, AKA "smooth" sow thistle.
But, all sow thistles are annuals, right?

That looks like a perennial.

We are "working on it," hennyjenny ;).
