New thread, new chapter, happy to be back.
I might not be a disciplined gardener like before.

Winter is still in full swing, and this is NichiNichi’s second winter. This year I decided to take a small gamble and stay open as usual—but January brought heavy storms, which meant nearly a full extra week of closure, and in February, with Carnival coming up, I chose to simply close for nine days straight.

Looking back, January was actually quite decent. It’s a short month, of course, but interestingly, the hourly rate was far better than August, which is usually the month with the highest overall revenue. Tracking hourly rate since last year’s fourth quarter turned out to be a very wise decision. It poked holes in the illusion created by high turnover and forced me to face a harder truth: earning “more” often just means trading away more of your finite, non-renewable time.

Quiet months are, in fact, the best time to actively rethink and refine how you work. Over this period, I’ve revisited and improved product selection, production methods, storage, and re-processing workflows—things that are much harder to adjust during busy seasons.

So, my hope for the busy months this year is this: to rely on improved efficiency, earn enough with fewer hours, and keep more time for myself and my family.

Charlie Munger put it beautifully—happiness in life has never come from having more, but from expecting less. Once you truly understand that, there’s no need to trade huge chunks of your life for money. It becomes a calm, comfortable cycle.

Keep practicing, keep moving, and keep enjoying each single day. :D

congrats! i'm glad you can share what you do here. :) i retired early after doing a lot of computer oriented work. no regrets with that choice. i consider myself very fortunate to be born where and when i was and that i was able to buy my freedom as i did.
Time and freedom/autonomy aren't measured in dollars.

It's no surprise that your cafe has become so successful. Hopefully you'll be able to scale back the hours, while still making a profit. One can't put a price on time.

Our lives/passions change over time and wax and wane. Perhaps in the future you might be growing more food for your restaurant OR more flowers to decorate it?
Doesn't matter.
You are still a valuable member of our online family.
NO excuses are necessary! :hugs
I did. Last year, part of my vegetable growing (especially leafy greens for salad and herbs, as they don't need so much direct sunlight) shifted from the main garden to the front yard (in front of cafe).

It's very interesting decision, and customers see what's on their plate are just within twenty steps away where they sit. Besides, front yard is also responsible for producing flowers for each table in the outdoor sitting area. To be honest, it's the beauty of staying small.

So many people asked why we don't move to a bigger place (and can earn more money) - I am confident that I can earn much more than such a garage-based cafe, but I don't want, as I only need certain money to keep building our financial independence. Enough is enough, and i am not willing to exchange more time for that.

As for the main garden, it gradually becomes a perennial garden and brought me a lot of joy 'foraging' on our own property - wild garlic/chive/scallion patch, berry patch, asparagus patch, fruit trees and vines start bearing fruits, herbs and roses, perennial flowering plants...etc. I became more like an observer and forager - and this role also brings totally different delight.

I will have 10-days off from next week, to start sowing for this growing season and re-arrange the outdoor sitting area, can't wait.

Another beauty is, when people come, I serve, otherwise, I am back to my daily life and keep what I should do to enjoy each day in 10 steps - this flexibility is something a bigger place can't afford.

And I keep studying and improving my recipes - to create food lighter and easier for body to digest.

Also turned cakes and cookies into Gluten-free, as gluten is not needed for both. More people can enjoy desserts~
