I am so sorry. I have had that happen twice, except with dogs and it is so upsetting.

Don't make the mistake of thinking a big raccoon won't tangle with a dog. They won't normally take the chance, but if cornered or ran down by the dog, there will be one heck of a fight. A 30 or 40 pound male 'coon can kill a much larger dog, especially if the dog in question doesn't have that vicious streak in them. I once saw a 20 pound raccoon fight off 3 of my buddy's Walker hounds until he finally shot it. He thought his dogs would whup it good, he found out differently when one of the dogs lost an eye and another was cut up pretty badly.

Since we are surrounded by woods, we have a constant raccoon population. It's generally live and let live until they cross the line. Then it's war and I will thin the population by any means necessary. I know a lot of ways to kill them, some humane, and some, well...not so much. The most effective method I have is called "the pan". It's also the most dangerous and scary method I know. I haven't used it in years because it is so scary. It is very effective though and kills nearly instantly. In fact, I have never found a 'coon more than 10 feet from "the pan", and find most with their faces still in it.

I have also drowned my fair share of them.

If its what I think it is, Id have to be pretty desperate to use it because it does not discriminate. It would be effective though.

Sorry to hear about that. Sounds kinda like a coon. They are tough to deter, you almost assuredly have to eliminate him. If you aren't able to do it bring in a friend to get rid of it.

We lost a dozen 16 week old poults a few years ago. That attack was a family of coons. I took care of them myself over the course of the next few days.
