All of those above will work.  You must have clayish soil.  My chocolate mint, peppermint and spearmint are exploding  in my beds, in my acidic topsoil.  EVEN I am considering pulling some of it up--yes, "I told you so" is probably in order!!  
I gave my mom some of my chocolate mint, and she planted it in her clay soil, west facing bed. It is only a little bush, and hasn't spread in three years, whereas MY beds have tripled.
Perhaps you could replant by digging a big hole and planting your mint in 1/2 and 1/2 dirt and mulch?
