We had oak floors put in about 25 years ago in the living room, parlour, and dining room. They still look new just like the first day they were installed. We've never refinished them. I just vacumn or dust mop once a week.

Were your kids grown and out of the house by then, Mary? I tell you, I know it will be futile to do much remodeling until mine are all beyond maybe 12 at least. They're more destructive than a whole litter of puppies! :confused:

I love the rich, warm look of hardwood floor. My dad had the 60+ year old oak flooring in his house refinished and it was like magic--beautiful again! It really is a good investment.

When you have messy kids and pets, carpet is a curse. The steam cleaner (and I) just can't keep up with it. $400 steam cleaner is now broken. Crazy people who owned my house before us had the kitchen and bathrooms carpeted. They were an older couple and I'm sure not as messy. But who doesn't spill something in the kitchen from time to time? I have asthma too, so we need to get this carpet out of here and go with wood and ceramic tile. I will be so happy when I can bleach and mop. :)

@baymule , your pics and tutorial have been very educational! I helped my sis and BIL lay wood flooring in their first home. It was fun and really neat to see it all come together. BIL did all the tricky cuts though.
 
I love wood floors, and we almost went that way, but we track so many tiny pebbles in the house from our boot treads (notice I said "we" when I really mean dh ) plus little puddles from snow, that we went with ceramic tile. I even bartered for it. DH did the labor in exchange for continuing to have my sweet company. :D
 
We put all carpeting in the house when we built it. Vinyl in the kitchen and ceramic on the big bathroom floor. The master bedroom's bath (yuck) was carpeted as well.

A few years ago I got the carpet out of the master bedroom and DH put down oak flooring. A short time later, the oak flooring was extended down the hallways. While the three other bedrooms are scheduled to have their carpeting removed, I suspect the family room will be next to get the oak floor.

I really prefer the ease of cleaning wood floors. Since GD and I are the only ones who remove our shoes in the house, carpets are in constant need of cleaning, IMHO.

I'm not sure what will happen to the blackboard in the foyer (slate turned upside down). The herringbone slate pieces need regrouting if we don't decide to replace them with something else.

Journey, yes my 3 kids were young when we put in the floors. The oldest was 5, middle one was 2, and later a baby. There are area rugs in the rooms. I guess that helped. I remember I didn't allow any steel type trucks that could be dropped and damage the floors in there. They had to use those types of toys in our large kitchen or bedrooms.

My MIL keeps saying she is glad I have carpet so the kids won't get hurt when they fall, but really I think hardwood or tile would be cleaner and healthier for them. I am glad to know the floors stood up to kids, @ninnymary !

You have to let them outdoors at some point and probably not encased in a bubble. My kids grew up on cement (major fixer house) and then Saltillo tiles. They managed with no broken teeth or concussions.
I know some kids are more accident prone, like my kids best buddies, brothers in a family of seven kids. They had their own wing at the ER!
