My Grand Mother had one of those treadle-powered sewing machines; to the best of my knowledge, it could only do one type of stitch. Their rural home, until the time it was torn down in the 90's, had no electrical power - so aside from a propane-powered refrigerator, no modern conveniences. A wood stove for cooking & hot water (and Franklin stove in the addition) with kerosene lanterns for light.
