My MIL has done well with the Japanese Painted Ferns. They multiply themselves eventually too! (Still waiting on her to send some my way... )

I killed two columbines putting them in a very wet bed, so check all shade plants for water requirements. You probably have very good drainage, so also consider sedems and any succulents.
