Hi! I'm new here and to gardening. I did a little bit of gardening last year. Only carrots. This year my dad and I are planting pumpkins, tomatoes, basil, watermelon, sunflowers, carrots, bell pepper, and strawberries. So far so good!!! Any tips for beginner gardeners? Oh and what do you put over strawberries to keep the birds from eating them? Thanks!! :D

Here are a few pictures of my plants. Carrots, a sunflower, and pumpkin.

Welcome mydogdory! Your plants look very healthy. The only place in my garden that I use bird netting on is the strawberry beds. They have hoops over them with the netting covering them. It works great and also keeps our squirrels and other critters from digging in there. So far the birds have stayed away from my raspberries that are in their second year and don't produce much. I hope I won't have to cover those also.

Welcome, mydogdory! :frow Cute pooch you have there. :) Looks like your garden is off to a good start this year.

I use plastic netting over either PVC or EMC (metal) hoops, or you can put in some stakes...say, 18" tall above ground and top them with tennis balls (make a slit and fit it over). I got some really good netting from Tractor Supply this year. It is heavier weight and doesn't tangle as easily as the lightweight stuff I got from Walmart last year. It was about $25 a roll. Certainly don't want the birds getting those wonderful strawberries you grew!

Welcome. Enjoy gardening especially with father. Some of my best times were fussing with my dad in garden. Loved to challenge each other over who had first tomato.

Welcome! Your carrots and Howdens look great! As others have said, use plastic netting over the strawberries. If you have never grown Howdens before, you're in for a real treat. They grow very fast and will take over everything around them.
