My okra plants have been desimated by the lazy ground squirrel babies wanting an easy breakfast. Yesterday, DS helped me to cage off the okra bed but I think they still managed to find their way in this morning. I swear those okra plants look more nekid today. So, DS reinforced the cage and hopefully my plants will leaf out again in time to actually produce pods. If not, its back to the freezer section of my grocery store. Its good thing that the only way I like eating okra is sliced, dredged in corn meal and fried, and that way of cookin works really well with frozen already sliced okra.

So bad to hear about that!

String up some tin cans and the noise should scare them away. Also, I've heard of people putting out garden hoses that make the squirrels think that they're snakes.

Commercially available coyote urine will help as well.

I've seriously thought about getting a rubber snake to set out there. I even asked DS to find one of his old toy snakes, but he can't. DS is 26 so I'm not at all surprised he doesn't still have it.

I'd love to put a sprinkler with a motion sensor out there! Silly rodents! Sheesh.

But, plants are tough, they may just come back and overwhelm you with okra! I'll cross my fingers! :)

My rabbit stripped my okra plants to nothing but the center stem. After about 6 weeks they recovered and sprouted new leaves, but only at the top so we only got one or two pods at a time from each plant.

I had that problem one yr too, the prarie dogs we have here ate just about everything okra included, which did not recover for me. I have not seen those little nasty critters for a few yrs now so hopefully they are gone & no problems this yr.
