Made some up-grades to my seed starting area’s recently. All the hardware’s in place and the lights are hung over the top shelf. In a couple days i’ll move the Mint and Comfrey which are on the lower shelf, then i can finish hanging the remaining lights at which point; “i’m open for business”!
Each shelf holds 9ea 10/20 trays with 18 #35 pots per tray. Thats 324 little somethings; some of them will remain in starter pots and some move up to 5 1/2 inch’ers and a few into 2/4 gallon bags.
This is where it all “starts” but before long i’ll have things spread into two more areas and by late March/early April everything will be bursting at the seams.
Once the weather allows it all goes to the greenhouse where some will remain and the rest will be planted into beds when were beyond frost, mid May!
These are my first dimmable grow lights and im very pleased with them. 300 watt per light X 4ea should do it! I currently have a pair of them on my indoor cucumbers (growing out in the shop) and they are doing real well.

My second area is a little larger and where the bigger stuff resides. This section got a couple of the new LED’s as well; and about half of the retiring T-5 fixtures can be seen on the floor.
Each of these LED’s give great light saturation over a 3 1/2 by 3 1/2 footprint.
Over here the drivers & dimmers will mount directly on the lights and plug directly into this bad boy! That work will happen early in the week.
Those 2x4’s seen mounted on the wall above the lights support another section of cattle panel (like the shelf below) and in the fall what ever im drying is easily spread out to dry. A fan blows up from the bottom and an exhaust fan sucking from on top will dry a BIG arm load of mint in a hurry!

The wind broke the top half of this tree off last week so i have no problem running screws into her! And with an ambient of minus 18 i thought it a good time to knock together a temporary suet feeder. With 20/30lbs of trim (suet) left over from this fall’s yak/beef butchering i was starting to feel guilty and decided to “get er done”!
Didn’t take 10 minutes until i had customers. They still frequent the rib sections on my main feeder but this is kinda like a drive thru, no peck, peck, peck to get a bite. Just grab a piece and go if your in a hurry or stick around and visit with your friends if you like!
In the spring i’ll build a nice one for the suet with protection to keep the big birds out and mount it on the other pole.
Now; even though i’ve got a wee bit of a flu bug creeping in; i feel a lot better!

Normally i’ll start 4 plants early in July, up stairs in one of the grow areas and they will produce until about now then we suffer thru till spring waiting for the greenhouse to start producing. This is my first year trying to keep them year round so this group was started 9 weeks ago. The new plants are coming in well now and with any luck at all we may have our own cukes into the spring. “Happy days”
In another 3 weeks the trellis will be covered with vines and fruit. And just think less than 10 feet away; on the other side of the shop wall it’s been hanging below zero for about a month now.
And im just realizing; i’ve broken my “earliest cucumber” record by over 4 months!!!

Today i set up the last new lights, adding another pair to the Cucumbers. So far i’ve got Mint, Comfrey and these cukes under them and everything is thriving with them dimmed to 50%. And almost non mentionable heat.
Im especially fond of how light these things are, making them very easy to maneuver and place just where i want them. Horizontal or Vertical is nice too Especially for a trellis.

Due to the relative “tightness” of this hootch, im putting together a little experiment. I’ve added a jug of sugar/yeast/water and have a real co2 bag headed this way along with a small monitor to let me see what actually develops?
I say relative tightness knowing co2 is heavier than air so the fully open top wont be an issue.
I’ve read several articles on this, all advertising 20/30% increase in production! Having grown this strain for 8 years indoors and out; im pretty familiar with the output so i should notice a 20% increase.
Not that we’ll need any more cucumbers but just because i can.

Rube Goldberg co2 bag!
While exploring “the ingredients” and coming to understand the very simple process i gathered up some raw compost; heavy on the rabbit poop, and doused it with an inoculant to get things going, and used enough liquid humic to moisten the Mycos.
The bag is sealed and setting on a warm spot in the heated shop floor.
If the bag expands i’ll know it worked and if so i’ll move it into the cuke hootch, if not i’ll dump the contents on the cuke soil and water it in; win-win!
And when my “store bought bag show up i’ll be able to do a side by side comparison.
Man i must be bored?
