It doesn’t look like much YET, but real soon you’ll be staring at my motor driven compost trommel. The drum is 30 in diameter and 4 ft. Long.
no more shakey, shakey the screen.
i have enough time to complete it in time for this year’s compost.
I spent quite a bit of time looking for a “just right motor” before discovering portable cement mixers! More horse power, perfect rotation (28rpm) and 1/4 the price of a Granger motor; and it was on the shelf at the box store!

several other items from the mixer may get used too.

Over the last couple days i‘ve moved the can a little farther down the road. An adaptor to couple the motor to a lovejoy coupling was machined, the spider hubs that attach the rotor to the drive shaft were machined and a pair of ends were machined and welded into a piece of 1” sch 80 pipe.
Today most of that was assembled and i’ll be working on the end frames next.

The winter cukes are emerging; and this probably isn’t interesting to most. During our long winters the thing we miss most is “our cukes” so this year im setting up the start room much earlier than normal and will grow out a couple plants. These are a Japanese “Unagi” and im curious how they’ll do in a complete controlled environment.

A Beit Alpha and Long Asian cross - interesting.

I like long Japanese cucumbers and Beit Alpha types are super. I really should grow them on a trellis so that the long cukes grow in their proper shape. Yes, considering their food value, it's funny that cucumbers are very much a garden favorite. Peel, slice and sprinkle a little good vinegar on them - serve with slices of beefsteak tomatoes and crackers!

Some might say that pickles are an off-season substitute but I can eat a LARGE cucumber but only eat a small pickle ;). A common way for me to eat a cucumber is either in the garden or driving home from the garden, as a cool & refreshing snack.

@digitS', our regular crop cukes are “sweet success” which the wife makes into refrigerator (ferment) pickles and we eat a couple big slices daily; even when we are up to our ears in fresh cukes! We’re eating up the last jar from last year and she’s done with this years batch, which totals roughly 15 gallons!

The Inagi may replace the sweet success if it checks all the boxes during it’s trial period this fall/winter?
