Over Night Temperatures

Luckily, our Arctic cold blast is supposed to be short-lived. Tomorrow night dropping below zero and very windy, then a high of 5 degrees F on Friday, below zero again Friday night, but warming up and snowing on Saturday. I won't be able to look my chickens in the eye, as they will not be happy about any of this.

While there isn't much snow pack, the cross-country skiing is great after Monday's snow. If I race home after school, I can ski our loop of trails in the woods before dark. A perfect antidote to rambunctious children!

Time for Long Nights (& cold) - the sun now sets here before 4pm and rises after 7:30am.

I tried to catch the rising of the full Moon of Long Nights but it was cloudy. This morning, it was a brilliant silver disk! Luckily, I had a good view from the house windows as it was 4°f outdoors.

A little more snow will fall tonight and tomorrow, then it will be well below zero Saturday morning. All this, according to the Weather Service. I imagine that moon will still be brilliantly shining through those windows on Saturday morning, too.

For past 2 days new reports warned of last nights temperature. City did automated calls reminding people to disconnect outside hoses and freezing pipes. Last night with wind chill 15 below zero. NOT this am car read temp at 28 degrees.

Yesterday about noon, Portland, Ore. had a total of 1/2 inches of snow by 3. my wife took the bus to the park and ride on the north side of Vancouver. Wa. a distance of about 20 miles most of it on I 5 which took 4 HOURS due very heavy traffic on black ice, spin outs and accidents. Then, when she got into her car, it was covered in 1/2" of snow and about the same in ice on the windshield. She started the car and put the defroster on to melt the ice then drove the the next 9 miles home with took another hour. Total of just over 5 hours. This morning on the news, they said that some students in Portland, Ore. were let out of school at 1:30 in the afternoon , got on the school bus but took up to midnight to get home. You see, there are MANY HILLS in and around Portlad 100- 1,000+ feet tall and most of the roads are covered with black ice and snow , so slip and slide spin outs galore and most of the buses do not carry chains. Any cars that break down or spins out and are left by the owner on the side of the roads get towed and then they charge the car owner $248 to get their car out of storage. :duc The city will NOT use salt on the roads because it is bad for the environment. :idunno
