Over Night Temperatures

Hi Steve!
DH is off this week so I was tending the fire until he plowed and snowblowed (blew?) my feeding route. Feeling downright pampered!

There will be a lot of shovel activity later though as he plans on taking the accumulation off the roof tomorrow. That's always a bummer. When that snow hits the ground it's like wet concrete and I'm the default doorway clearer. Personally I think we could get away with leaving it for a while longer and hope for some melt off, but it makes him nervous.
He has the time this week so....

When Kid#1 was real little we camped in Sequoia two years in a row in January. We had a camper on the truck those times, so the snow was fun. We have also camped in the winter in Kings Canyon in a tent.
Not so cozy. And it was not my idea, haha.

I'm also thinking of getting the roof rake out.

About 50% of the problem with using it is that I have only about 50% of a perimeter path shoveled. I have essentially no other reason than raking the roof to clear paths in 1/2 the yard.

A good reason not to bother was the 34°f and 25mph wind gusts yesterday afternoon. The trees were very pretty but the overhead wires were really weighted from encasing in snow. All gone! Probably just "settled" the snow on the roof ...

Ah Shoot! I don't wanna go out there and rake it off! Ya know, I'd have to clear that path a second time, anticipating more snow storms. Maybe I can just clean the valleys and the porch roofs ...

It is 18 and feels like -3 right now. I am worried about the snow on the rabbit hutch roof, but DH says it is okay. I guess tomorrow I will take some off so I don't have to worry.

it's 49 and 3/4" of rain so far..... no shovel just waders...

I still haven't brought out the roof rake altho there were a couple hours of heavy snowfall yesterday afternoon.

Reasons to get the dang thing out:

• there was 1.29" of December precipitation

Reasons not to bother:

• afternoon temperatures were above freezing on 12 December days
  
• there have been wind gusts above 25mph over the last several weeks, last night, and continuing (the trees are bare of snow again)
• the NWS says that the only chance of snow over the next 7 days will be on the weekend
  
• see last post
• baby, it's cold outside!

Do people clean snow from roofs because of weight or worry about leaks when melting

Both.

I'm not sure about how much of an ice dam there is at the roof overhang right now but that can certainly be a problem with melting snow pooling behind it. The gutter is likely to be full of ice but there's no fixing that.

If 10 inches of snow equals 1 inch of water ... there are over 5 pounds of water on every square foot of roof.

Steve in the Westport house we had heating wire that kept gutters ice free. Think it came from home depot

I know some folks with one on a hillside lot with a very steep driveway. He recently turned 90.

I'm hoping they will move to their condo soon. It has sat empty for years, all of about 3 miles away.
