Paste Tomato

Yes, Jack I like the San Marzano's too. They really produce! I have planted Amish paste a few times, but they don't compare to the San Marzano. So, Jack are you starting seeds for your outside garden, already?
I started the tomato and pepper seeds yesterday, and actually I am a slightly behind last year in seed starting. After sprouting I will grown them indoors under a 400 watt MH light and move them to the greenhouse on nice days. It usually takes a week or two under lights in cubes before I pot them, so it is really not that early for mid May planting.

As I've mentioned before, I LOVE Black Sea Man. It is my tomato of choice for eating out of hand as well as salads. Ugly, but delicious!

I've tried both Amish Paste and San Marzano. The chickens got all the SM's so I really didn't get a chance to compare them with the AP. My AP were very prolific, but small. Whether that was the result of the variety or the drought I can't say. On the other hand, my Gilberte Red paste tomatoes from three years ago were huge AND prolific. I still have plenty of Amish Paste seeds. I am not sure if I have any San Marzano seeds left - one at the most. I haven't decided on what tomato varieties to grow this year - other than BSM - but I suspect the Gilbertes will replace the Amish Pastes this summer.

Love, Smart Red

Jared, you better try that Japanese Black Triefle, or I will be disappointed in you! I've told you before, it's my favorite! :) Sort of a smokey sweet flavor.

Mary,

I looked up the tomato and ordered some seeds, though I don't know where I am going to put them at this point. They just sound so good I could not resist trying them. ;)

Years ago, what am I saying, decades ago I grew some paste tomatoes called Porter. Strong flavored, very dense and meaty. Have not even seem them in forever.

For a paste, I go with Burpee's Big Mama's.

I don't know what is going on here. I get Blossom End Rot with any paste tomato I plant. I tried San Marzano a few years back and loved them except for that BER. I had the same problemn with Romas. I do all the tricks; mulching to maintain moisture, Epsom Salts, my soil has plenty of calcium, pH is OK. I plant them mixed with the various slicers and still it is the paste types that get BEM the worst. The Big Mama's have been the best I've found so far for resistant to BER but I still get some. I don't see much, if any, BEM on the other types, just the paste types.

I'm also trying Burpee's Supersauce this year. I think it is their first year offering them. It's supposed to be a huge sauce tomato with lots of meat and very little gel. Big Mama and Supersauce are both hybrids.

I'm cutting back this year on varieties. A couple of years ago I had 18 different varieties. This year I'm going with 4th of July another Burpee hybrid my wife really likes, Pink Brandywine, and Jubilee. I always pick up some Park's Whopper at the garden center.

I don't have any black varieties this year. I'll probaby pick up one somewhere. I tried Black from Tula last year and it did not produce so I didn't save any seeds. I've had Japanese Bladk Trifele before and it is a great tasting tomato.

Ridge, add bone meal and egg shells anyway for your tomatoes, water normally, and don't let a day sneak by without a little water.

If you find it. A product called Black Label Zinc will do amazing things for BER. 1/2 pint will treat 50+ plants. Just mix with water and water.
