the symbol is a representation of a ratio which can never be fully evaluated. at some point you get enough decimal places for the accuracy your particular problem requires but at the superfine scale of things it no longer matters because you've gone to working below the scale of fractions of the size of a subatomic particle...
like many things, the theory is interesting, but application leads you to say, "hmm..."
