Plant combinations ideas????

I'm trying to figure out what I'm putting with what in pots this year. I have all kinds of different things I grew from seed or cuttings and then I picked up some other plants when I could get a deal on them. What are you favorite combinations for part sun to full sun? I have pots from 14 inches wide up to the 2-3 feet wide ones.

Gee, that is a hard question. I have tried so many things over the years... I try to stick to the thrill, spills, fill- recipe. With annuals it is hard to go wrong. So many choices with nice color! I wish I could I could come up with something I love for the thrill (tall plant). Of course, there is the spike- and I kind of enjoyed ornamental millet... but I haven't planted something that really knocked my socks off yet. What are you imagining in your pot?

If you can find Echium seed, the annual, you can direct sow it right now. It is the bluest flower you will ever see. I was part of a garden tour and everyone went wild for it.

Some of those little 4" pot Fucshias really make a great center for a pot. It can be surrounded by Alyssum or Pansies. or one of the little colorful hybrid jump ups...

A Gerbera Daisy in the middle surrounded by Wave Petunias in a nice hanging basket, well, you won't want just one like this. Better make several of them.

If you want a perennial project for an outdoor hanging or set basket, one in a pottery container, try starting with a small leaved variegated english ivy in front of a medium sized old fashioned fuschia. These will both grow and can be shaped. fun.

Or for a shade challenge, a begonia center in a larger pot, small perennial shade leaf plants around it. This pot will divide each year into many eventually.

I'm finally back, ye old laptop finally croaked and I've been trying to figure out the new one with Windows8, AGH! LOL Last year for shade I had a very large pot that I put vinca trailing down (grew into a waterfall), with dusty miller, red shrimp plant, red rose begonia with asparagus fern and perilla in it. Have to say all the neighbors were intrigued and wanting it. LOL For sure will look for echium. If I can get my pics off my old laptop I will post a picture of some of my combinations.

For part shade, I just planted one of those coral/caramel looking heuchera with bacopa spilling around it. It is in a tall urn. I also planted a fuchsia with golden creeping jenny around it in an old maple bucket and hung it on the fence.

I've now realized where I use to have the only shade, the neighbors cut out trees and Wow, I do not have shade anywhere! AGH! I have a few gerbera, million bells, lots of petunias, verbena, angelonia (not sure what color they'll be) and same on the pentas I grew, scarlet sage, pineapple sage, coral nymph salvia, heliotrope, celosia, I could go on. LOL Seems I've lost all my pictures on the old computer for good, can't show things I've done in the past now. Bummer!

I like a colorful grass looking plant with little wheat looking heads (about 1 ft tall) for the center. Then a medium size flower around that, like an impatient. Then a small flowy flower to fill in all around and flow over the top of the pot. Hows that for not much help?! Sorry!!

This is not exactly what I was talking about. But you get the idea.

I used the purple fountain grass last year with millions bells in red and the lime green potato vine but the fountain grass didn't overwinter (was hoping it would down in my crawlspace) and they are wanting a ridiculous price for them this year. I bought 10 new 14 inch hanging baskets to put on the posts of my privacy fence not thinking about the fact I need hooks of some kind to hang them. LOL So I guess I'll be doing all kinds of different groupings. LOL
