My husband is a Texan and all his family came up for our son's birthday party. They probably bootlegged them over.

Thank you! I'm sure Google was as I searched "bug in a blanket" "turtle bug" "cocoon bug" "bug in a shell" "bug that looks like it's in a blanket" "bug larvae in a shell".... I'm gonna stop there at admitting how many different things I tried.

There will be a hunting and squishing party at ccheek's place this evening. EVERYONE'S INVITED!!!

US states not found, ID or WY? Well, I can assure you that they are in some parts of ID (for your "id"). They crawl up on the siding of houses and hang around there. Yuck

Thanks @digitS'. Do you think that means I can leave them? I don't mind them taking nibbles as long as they don't annihilate the bush (such as squash bugs in a matter of a day). I'm sure my kids would love to watch them grow into beetles.

I don't know, CC ... Where I remember seeing them repeatedly on a house wall, there was not much in the way of plants near it.

About half the wall had a stack of bricks beside it. The other half was just lawn grass. It was some distance to anything other than lawn (& grass clippings?) for them to eat.
