I spied this pretty little thing in the ground cover around the base of an oak tree.
Any idea what it is???

Possibly Loosestrife? I have read that the purple variety is invasive, but I couldn't even keep a plant alive in my garden, so....a testimony to my gardening skills.:(

it lives in ditches easily around here and is considered an invasive/pest. i don't know how well it would do in a garden, i think it needs near wetland conditions.

Not wetland where it is. Not even wet enough to grow grass - that's why I put a mix of ground covers in.

sorry, :) i side tracked to the purple kind, i'm not sure what the white flowered plant you posted might be. the tall woody stem like that reminds me of several plants here but none have that flower on top (and they are all tough to remove because the roots are also pretty woody).

It's about 12-18" tall.
I didn't try to bend it so I don't know if the stem is woody or just grass-stem stiff.
