Rediscovering The Classics

Last year I became a fan of zinnias. Growing up everyone had zinnias in their flower gardens. I guess because they where so common growing up I never planted them. I picked up 2 cell packs last season and planted them in a container. They did so well now I wouldn't think of not planting some. This spring I picked up anther flower from childhood cosmo, so far I really like it. Flowering away with almost no care from me. Have you rediscovered any plant from Your childhood?

I remember bachelor buttons growing along a fence row. Always came back from reseeding every year. This year I planted some in the garden, along a fence. They are just about to bloom. Those, and larkspur, are two of my favorite. If you ever want to play a dirty trick on someone, scatter a pack of cleome seeds in their flower beds. They are pretty, but they smell bad, and you can't get rid of them.

That's how I feel about bachelor buttons. Can't get rid of them...

Wife and DD love them.

For me, moss rose and 4 O'Clocks. Lost, so bought seeds to restart them.

Wild white rose. There are almost none of the gardeners are not planting in the garden. It blooms once, but very fragrant. When I was 6 years old, and I lived with my grandmother in the summer, I ran away from home at railway. There she blossomed. I am very loved it! I had a big dog, but she had a pack of wild dogs. And I was in the middle of the pack. Local old woman baptized foreheads and predicted that the dog will tear me. They complained to my grandmother, and she scolded me. But I ran away again. Then she took a shovel and planted a bush near our home for me. It is the descendant of the roses, is now near my house!

Larisa beautiful and a great story. We have wild rose here, very invasive small single petal flower big pain.

That's a beautiful rose to be found in the wild Larisa. I like your story, you had a wise grandma.

We have wild roses too, probably the same as NYboy, they are called Woods rose (Rosa woodsii), and I like them. They are fragrant also, and only bloom once. (They can be a little bit of a problem. I guess...)

It may be, but around here it's more likely multiflora (in either white or pink)

One really old "classic" I am quite fond of is baloon vine a.k.a. Love in a Puff (Cardiospermum) which was popular in the 19th century, and a lot of fun for kids (at least, if you live somewhere where it gets cold enough to keep it from going noxious and invasive). As a bonus, as long as I keep doing my seed hunts, I get seed for it free (it shows up in the beans a LOT as does sensitive plant)

Bleeding hearts is the plant I most remember from my childhood. A large one grew beside Aunt Claris's front door and I loved it.

At home there were lilies of the valley growing beside the house. Stayed neat because of the walkway that held them in place. I made many mud cakes with lily bells as decoration.

But the annual I most like is balsam (aka Touch Me Not). It is an old fashion farmhouse flower. When the seed pods are ripe, a slight touch will send the seed shooting out as the pod pieces curl away. I do have some to plant this year, but forgot about them. I'll need to get them started soon. Fortunately, they are fast to bloom.

Foxglove.

When you are 3, and you look up into foxglove flowers (because they are tall and you are small), it's like a little world in there ...

And, then the name ... did you know that a fox will wear gloves on occasion?
