RHododendrons are really tough. Could be fungus but I wouldn't worry about it. I saw a 15 ft tall rhododendron on our Carbondale hike last Sunday. It is probably over 100 years old and NOBODY cares for it.
They are understory trees, so if you or somebody else cut the tree that shaded it, it Might be having some difficulties

it doesn't look major to me and i'd just leave it alone. if it doesn't seem to be spreading or getting worse... if you have a magnifying glass you could look closer at it and see if it fungal and forming spores that could spread and if it is you could remove those leaves but i don't think it looks like that to me from this far away. what it looks like is some kind of damage which may have been from an animal or person in passing and not something to worry too much about. i'd classify it as stuff happens...

i do like the plants and when i was in TN in the hills in the eastern part i really enjoyed my hikes up into the hills and paths where they grew in the wild. i even have a small piece of a branch that had broken off and it was really appealing to me for some reason so i brought it back to my apartment and made what was to become an incense burner (but i don't burn incense any more so it's just a nice piece of wood that fits my hand well) with it and still have it almost 30yrs later (it has a flat end so it works well to crush eggshells
).

).Agree with flowerbug, rhododendrons are pretty tough and that kind of marking usually isn't worth worrying about. Could be old frost damage or just mechanical damage from something brushing past it. If it's not spreading and the new growth looks healthy, I'd leave it alone.

Rhodies grow wild here too!
