What Did You Do In The Garden?

I went to WINCO and got our regular stuff, plus I grabbed a few long term items for going down into the deep pantry. . When I was checking out, I mentioned to the fella that Sunday is my hub's 72 birthday and he loves parsnips (of which I had several lbs). OH MY GOSH he said! I LOVE parsnips!! WOAH I said. How do you like them best?

He likes to cut them into coins, then cover with panko crumbs and fry in butter! YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I told him I've tried so many times to grow them, with no success. He said his Grandma taught him how. Plant a row of seeds. Tend them and let them overwinter. The next year tend them, and let them overwinter. Then the 3rd year, at harvest time I'll have long thick parsnips ready to pull!! He said thats the way we have to grow them here. COOL!!

I'd like to live in-between you guys and come harvest your dandelions! I love to make tea from the flowers and use the leaves in spicy salads! Dandelions have many health benefits too! I've even used the root to make bitters!
Yes dandies make wonderful garnishes for a tad of spice for salads. When I was in hort school I had a whole list of etible weeds…( I think I have acres of every one of ‘em ). Dandelion wine anyone ? Or even pickle dandies . But I digress…

Dahlia , You know your only a hop skip and a jump away from me your welcome anytime to come pick as many dandies as you wish… it’s only 7 acres to pic and grin thru. 😀

We'll have to share notes. :hugs
Sure 😀… So what’s ya got on dandies?

Thank you! If I head down that way it would be fun to stop in for some dandelion tea! 😍

It’s a hour or so drive and the freeway is always tricky especially in rough weather. Maybe in summer when the weather is better and the entire pasture is chalked full of dandies and free for the Pickens. Your welcome anytime…
Tea is a must.. margarita dandie tea…. mmmm 😋.

My 30 minutes (+) of exercise today was digging through a narrow bed so as to remove the neighbor's grass that escapes under the fence. It grew quite well through the Winter. And, I imagine that the fence provides some warmth through the recent cold nights.

The remarkable thing was how dry our soil is. Of course, this helped in leaving soil behind in the bed. This is the first digging that I have done in about 2 weeks. The last shovel work was along a narrow path of a larger bed. I am anticipating water restrictions and will be setting my lawn mowing schedule now in anticipation.

Went through one bed with a spading fork.

The ground was converted from lawn just a few years ago and it was satisfying to see how the soil has improved. It is in contrast, somewhat, with the bed beside it. At one time, both were part of a driveway from one end of the lot to the garage at the other end. This was years ago and the driveway shifted at one point when a carport was built on one side of the structure. The "garage" had a wooden floor built into it and became an enclosed workshop.

The car access was essentially gone before we moved here in the 90's and it was all very acceptable lawngrass. At one time, I thought that the driveway had been covered with gravel. No, I now believe that I was just looking at our very gravelly, natural soil. Certainly, there has been no crushed rock added. The problem with the route to the carport was that car traffic continued. How late through the 20th century? I will guess about 15 - 20 years before we arrived here. The local tax office says that the garage was built in 1928. One hundred and 25 year old residence. I know that there were chickens; do you suppose that there was a horse 🐴?
