could you get a closer pic of the trunk base? i want to see what the bark looks like. i'm thinking apple or crabapple since it has the red leaves & the leaf shape makes it look like a close relative to a rose.

carol I have all colors they self seed like crazy for me. Problem is they flower late summer not best time to move them.

I think @Chickie'sMomaInNH is on to something. Those stems and leaves look more apple than hibiscus to me.

Hmmm looking at these, I wonder..... Son's neighbor has a BIG flowering tree (I do not remember any fruit though) I will have to go look at it. I wonder if it could be a volunteer from it. In which case it is too big for my flower bed.

yep, looks like crabapple to me. i'll snap some pics of my apple & crabapple seedlings in the yard this weekend so you can compare. most disease resistant types of roses & apples will have a red cast to the leaves, especially with the new growth.

Carol how lucky crap apple one of the prettiest trees. They can take heavy pruning so you can plant in yard. If you want to plant in your other garden they make great pollinators for apple trees.

Carol doesn't want a crap apple in her yard, she would be happy if it turned out to be a crab apple, though. Small yard though.
