STARTING SEEDS!?

I, who said I couldnt, or was it wouldnt (???) try to start seeds.well I am at it again and it is ALL YOUR FAULTS.

I innocently went to CVS for a fixa chocolate barand there it was. The tiniest garden section I have ever seen. squished in between an Easter display. It was decadent.

They had all kinds of un-named starter veggies.but then.there was some peat pots. Twenty-six pots for an enormous price of $1.99. My mind started reeling. I bought a bag of potting soil, for the veggies at $3.99. I look in the next isle and there was a plastic storage box (seed tray) , with lid .just the right size for a seeding tray and something that I had never thought as using before for this purpose. And, on sale for a whopping $3.99. It is amazing how the mind works under pressure.

When I got home, I search the cooking stuff and found a smallish cooking rack to sit in the bottom of the storage box so that the peat pots do not sit in water.

I have planted sweet peas, Simpsons Elite lettuce and Salad Bowl lettuce and just for sh.and giggles a 1992 unopened package that just says Tomato on it. How desperate of me. row Ok, laugh if you must. At least I am trying. And, it looks like I have been trying for years. :weight Here is a picture of my two minutes of labor. After looking at the catalog prices for this seeding stuff...I think I did pretty good.

Good for you!! You might want to cover with plastic wrap, just until they germinate. A lot of folks have good luck with putting them on top of the fridge, for added heat. Remember they don't need light until they germinate...Can't wait to hear if you get the tomato to grow!!! Keep us posted!

Thanks. I will put the storage box lid on it loosely or put a hole in it. They are on a shelf that faces south west and it gets sun all day. I hope that will work. :watering

OK, if true confession is what I am doing here....in the picture to the left. You will see a pyrex loaf pan. There is corn in that....Silver Queen. That is only from 1998. Hey! my heart has always been in this...it is just that working and illness does get in the way.

What comes to mind here is a line I heard from the movie Jurassic Park...."Life finds a way". Here is hoping that just because...that maybe....just maybe.... there is just a little life left in those seeds. I hate to throw away seeds.

I have to stop and wait a while I am overrun right now trying to cheer myself up

I have stopped having folks over because I am running out of places to sit and explanations for my crazy behavior

I say those seeds will probably germinate. Now, maybe not ALL of them but just this year I planted some globe amaranth and some Mexican Bird of Paradise from seeds my mother had saved back in the mid 90's - they all sprouted! And last year I started cantaloupe seeds she had saved a good 10+ yrs ago. So I am like HiD - pay no mind to those dates! Good luck! I love seed starting.....

It seems like every store is selling seeds & gardening supplies! I was at Walgreens yesterday, and they had the same sort of setup. I love that enough people are interested in gardening that a drugstore sees a market there.

Germinating seed in the sun may or may not be a good idea, Ladyhawke. Covering them, really adds to the risk.

Most seeds, require little more than moisture and heat. Obviously, they can have a little too much of either. It's the heat that you may need to be concerned about.

Starting out of the sun means that you have to watch things closely. Seedlings will get spindly quickly if the available light isn't strong enuf. And sometimes, there's this difficult decision when you figure that like half of the plants haven't emerged but those that have, are starting to s t r e t c h -- in a desperate search for more light. Sunlight is usually the best choice at that moment. But any kind of cover in the sun . . ? . . I don't know . . .
