Last winter the Polar Vortex, that far north version of the jet stream, collapsed from November to March. It's return began in February with 2 weak ones that eventually merged. That was the first time in known history that a major stream collapsed.

This year the polar vortex collapsed around October 25th. It's collapse is directly correlated with relatively warm air circulating into the stratosphere over the arctic ocean. That happens because the arctic ocean is now more and more liquid water. Only deep ice is left during summer very near the north pole, and the deep ice receded to record levels again this year. Deep ice takes hundreds of years to create. The pack ice recedes and advances every year but has been advancing less each year. Pack ice now recedes to the deep ice nearly everywhere except north of Greenland, every year lately.

That is a great huge money saving bonus for shipping companies and distributors! New shipping lanes were added again this summer, and will last closer to winter this year, some will continue all winter.

New ships are being designed and made just for the new polar routes.

=====

But this means colder winters for some places in the temperate zones!

You see, the polar vortex, when working right, holds the northern polar air masses to latitudes north of it.

When the polar vortex stops, the cold polar air masses are free to range south. And they do.

So rather than getting storms from the bering strait, now storms are free to be set loose from north of Greenland, the actual north pole, and everywhere up there that a storm may form.

Storms may now enter the north polar region too, from the south.

=====

All of this is making meteorologists have to do a lot of relearning.

=====

Is the Holocene over?

Answer will be no when the geo people give their answer. An earth period of time has a geological requirement to define it.

But when, and if, the oceans rise substantially, then the Holocene will be over.

=====

Guess what makes the ocean rise more:

a) both polar ice caps melt completely
or...
b) oceanic water temperature rises an average of 4 degrees

=====
Answer is b!
Ya see, water expands only slightly when it warms up, but it does expand. The oceans are a lot of water, and that .0000something expansion adds up to a lot.

But, both will happen to a greater or lesser extent.

=====

hint: if you live at less than 60 feet above sea level, don't make 100 year plans for your property that include it being dry.
If you live just higher than 60 feet above sea level, your property may well become seaside oceanfront property in about 100 years.

=====

These cold stormy winters are happening because global warming is happening.

Forecast:

0% cloud cover all day, today.

wind speed between 2mph from the NE, changing to 1mph from the NW in the afternoon.

High Temperature: another 45 degree afternoon!!! Wow, the best it can do ?! It really must have been a "cold air mass" that moved in with all of yesterday's wind.

So far nary a single drop of rain, just the clouds up there teasing.

I was thinking your weather looks a lot like mine, Marshall.

Until, you got to that 50.1.

Nearest weather station has been at 26 since 4am.

The local weather man said showers on Sat., rain on Sunday and into Monday. Then there is a very cold front forming over Alaska and will invade our neighborhood with record low temperatures and possible snow on Tues. and very cold the rest of the week. :rant
