Students from Hudson's Bay High School's horticulture section of the school's Architecture, Construction. Environmental Services magnet program in Vancouver , Wa. have been selected as one ( out of 3,100 schools ) of five national winners in the 2014 -2015 Samsung Solve for Tomorow contest for their project of growing Oyster mushroom mycelia to reclaim cardboard waste, and produce mushrooms that can be used for growing kits, as food additives or for large- scale recycling. :clap The contest is a national competition to raise enthusiasm for science , technology, engineering and math. education. The school received $120,000 , software valued at $9,000, and another $9,000 in cash which the school will use for a new outdoor greenhouse exclusively for the mushroom mycelia recycling project by next fall. Students from the video program created the project's presentation, other students from the horticulture section created kits for the public to grow oyster mushrooms at home. :celebrateCulinary arts students will use the oyster mushrooms to develop veggie burgers, and other culinary uses for them. :drool The school will start to grow other types of mushrooms in the near future. :ya
