After eating at my grand daughters' school for grand parents day, I understand why they love coming to my house for meals.
They eat breakfast there every day, too, but I understand that breakfast is better there than the lunches are. Sausage biscuits, French toast sticks, cereal. Maybe pancake sausage on a stick?
I bet those could be made at home, a lot healthier. But kind of a lot of trouble.

I grew up on processed food, my mother worked a full time job yet had dinner on table at 5 o clock. Weekends and holidays is when she really cooked. For a working mom processed food was a life saver. All of my friends had moms who worked ate the same way. The stay at home mom who baked all day was on the other side of the tracks, their husbands made enough money that they could.

@Smart Red , did they ever serve those "super buns"? A big wad of pre-packaged chemical white dough, with a heavy sugar glaze.
Yes, it is right up there with PB&J preformed rounds (sans crust). Another breakfast choice was a pretzel with salt and mustard -- probably one of the better choices. Then there was the cereal students ate with chocolate milk.

We were just talking about the school's peanut butter -- one pound of "commodity" peanut butter mixed with one pound of butter. The 'French' dressing is 50/50 catsup with vegetable oil. It got to where I couldn't eat school lunches with the students without nearly gagging.

I realize they are now pushing whole grain breads, a cup of veggies and half a cup of fruit with each lunch. Guess what gets tossed into the garbage.

Schools serve what the kids will eat. IF they cooked home made meals, they would throw 80% away. Kids are used to high salt, high sugar foods.

Their job is to feed them, not raise them.

My daughter spent a semester of high school in France. She said their cafeteria was like fine dining!

Mary,

Do you think it would be better for our health if it's wrapped in ..

. ketchup leather?

True but the amounts will only keep a 80# person alive.

Plus you can have my portion of fish jellies they think is so great.
