I just posted an article on my blog about planting potatoes.
http://heronsnestfarm.blogspot.com/2012/05/planting-potatoes.html

We planted Rose and Yellow Finn potatoes and Yukon Gold's. I am wondering:
Did I leave anything important out of my article?
What kinds of potatoes y'all are planting and why?
Has anyone tried the purple potatoes and what do you think?
Anyone have a different regime for organic pest care?

we did purple potato last year dont know what happened but didnt get a good harvest of them...

Great blog, April! We are going to try an experiment this year. We are going to leave the tiny potatoes in the ground. We seem to get many volunteers, so maybe it will work. Last year we harvested quite a few potatoes from our garlic row!

I just placed my seed order this morning, only 2 months behind, ACK!

This year I'm planting Maris Piper again, because it performed so stupendously last year. I dropped Yukons, going to take a break from them since their yield is always ho-hum.

I'm giving Purple Viking another chance. Last time I grew them it was in an area I had turned in a prodigious amount of shredded sunflowers, and that had a horrible effect on productivity. ( I'm using all my $10 words up ).

I'm also growing Rose Finn fingerlings, because I'm a sucker for prosey catalog descriptions.

So far I've never had a pest problem with my potatoes. I do spray with a kelp solution about 3 times before they bloom, and use a bit of granular kelp and alfalfa meal at planting time.

I just think the bugs haven't discovered me yet. Our property is pretty isolated from the neighbors, and I don't think any of them garden much.

Nice blog, April!

Along with Yukons, we are trying Red Norland this year. We planted a few last year and loved the taste of them. Next year wil plan to branch out and try something new but wanted to stick to something "normal" for this year since we are very new at potatoes.

My Addironack blues were not very productive either. They got BIG but I didn't get many.
