It just makes me sad to cut them back every year. Because I know what is coming next and I think it's going to be a nasty 6 months ahead of us. Around march I cant take much more of Winter and sneak a peak to see if I have new growth yet. When I see the new growth I cant wait to uncover them for another summer.

Well that sounds good -- BUT DEAR -- its not easy to plant the summer flower if you have extreme hot weather there because mostly plants died with the heat of sunlight. Anyhow I like your idea and plan. Good Luck

My rambling rose over the backyard gate is a real mess. Not least of all because of the 40+mph winds last night!

I may take out all the old growth. That still won't remove the mildew. It invaded the new growth as soon as the vines shot out of the center of the plant last month.

That rose just deserves a spray regimen to try to keep that mildew under control. I'm not sure why it has been so bad the last few years! The growth has been good and it gets a lot of sunshine each summer day. Perhaps it is because shade from a tree darn near covers it very late & early in the season. Still, it is a deciduous tree . . .

edited: Ah! I wonder if it is that lousy aphid "honeydew" from that tree that's causing this!
