Have you ever been in an elevator like that? There used to be an operator who went up and down with you, handling door and controls. The first "self-service" one I was on, was stuck after I arrived on a floor and we had to push the doors open from the inside.
Of course the service elevator at the department store where I worked in high school was self-service. We would not just close the door and gate but had a rope to pull to make it operate
