I am having the same experience with my red apple (we have Never been able to figure out what it is, just that the fruit is sweet,) It produced this year very well. I was planning on making it firewood end of the season, but I think I will selectively prune it next February and see what happens...
You might be pleasantly surprised. When we lived in California, we twice moved into a home with neglected fruit trees... peach trees, and a pomegranate. Both had small fruit just over golf ball size. A couple years later, after some pruning & care, we had tennis ball sized peaches - and softball sized pomegranates.

Fruit trees respond well to a little TLC. So do people. :hugs
