Yes, a woman would totally do something like this... Two years ago I created a hanging basket tree because ONE dove couple took up residence in a planter basket that was hanging in a bay tree. I watched eggs become babies and had a dream one night about a hanging basket tree. The next morning I felt compelled to build my dove neighborhood... I was able to round up about 15 different old baskets (planters, those 3 tier wire fruit baskets, several wicker, etc...) and place hay in the bottom of each one. I hung them up from different branches and waited. The baby birds grew up and flew away. The bird couple moved away. No other birds ever came.:( I ended up taking everything but one basket down last year. That one basket stays up... I check it every so often. No birds have made it their home since, but I want them to know the invitation is still open.

Oh, what a sweet story...I will tell you something I learned about birds. Being a bird house nut, I had them all over the place. Well, birds are smart and they won't build their nests in an area that looks like it will be crowded. One year, my resident house wren went around and built fake nests in all the other the bird houses (besides the one she was residing in), this way the other birds thought they were taken and she got the place to herself!

We have a beautiful pair of house wrens this year. He is red and brown and she is brown and grey. I have noticed that all of our 5 birdhouses had straw in them but only one is occupied (by the house wrens). I wonder if they pulled that same stunt? Hmmmm.
