I knew that there is a big problem with rogue males, particularly those who don't grow up with their mother (Due to poaching?) and I knew that mothers are very protective when they have youngsters. And I have seen that some elephants develop a deep distrust of humans after seeing poachers kill their herd mates. But, like Valley Ranch, perhaps, I tend to think of them as the docile pack animals that we see in India, carrying people on their backs, or moving logs, etc. I do know that they are this docile only after years of being tied and psychologically trained. The whole idea makes me sad.
