In the 1990's my wife and I volunteered at Franz Elementary just before school started three different years. We helped the teachers get their classrooms ready. I remember installing one of those old crank-handled pencil sharpeners the teacher had. She was so pleased that that year she would have a pencil sharpener in her class for her first time. That building as in pitiful shape. Now it holds a charter school, no longer a public school.

That article is wrong. It was federal marshals escorting her, not fire marshalls.

I love that picture. That pristinely dressed little girl, all hope and nervousness, contrasting with the official "guards" and the tomato-splatted wall showing the resistance that was all around her....

I don't know that we have made much progress since then. :(
