Tomato Mania

I went to a tomato mania event today and there were more varieties of tomatoes than I even knew existed! I was so tempted by many of them but since I am new to gardening, I figured I should hold myself back a little. I did pick up one each of Sweet 100, Red Currant, Brandywine, San Marzano, and Fireworks. This is in addition to the Sweet Million and two Early Girls I already have in the ground.

I really wanted another paste tomato but I forgot to pick one out before I left. I will probably just pick up a Roma somewhere. Did I mention I don't even like tomatoes? I do use them in things, but just eating a tomato straight... yuck! Maybe having decent homegrown ones will change my mind...

Great addiction to have. Try a fresh ripe tomato w/good bread, little mayo........food for a king. If you like onions, you can add to sandwich.

& of course my families favorite.........fresh salsa w/tomato's, peppers, cilantro, garlic, onions out of the garden......can July get here soon enough.

Don't feel bad, I start out every year thinking only a few different plants, next thing I know, 6-8 different types for about 50-60 plants.

Fresh salsa is my favorite thing to do with tomatoes. My husband is calling part of my front garden "the salsa garden", it has tomatoes, jalapenos, and garlic. I told him it's not a complete garden in the front because the cilantro and onions are planted out back...

Don't feel too bad, I have 11 different varieties started...we won't talk about how many plants....I get carried away!!!

I guess I'm behind the times. I only have eight different varieties started, six heritage (Sweet Tangerine, Rutgers, Mr. Stripey, Black krim, Japanese Black and Jubilee) and two hybrids (4th of July and Big Mama). But I plan on three more varieties minimum. I know which types they will be (a cherry, Brandywine, and a slicer) but not sure which exact varieties. Depends on what is available in those categories. Does that help catch me up?

I always had incredible success with tomatoes, but for some reason I am having any trouble getting them to germinate..
I did all the things I always do.. heat, perfect seed starting spoil, kept moist... aaaggg I am so sad

Tomato prices at the store are going to be weird this year. I am so glad I am growing my own.

I really wanted to try the San Marzano this year, but didn't get any ordered.

My husband hates store bought tomatoes and when we go out eat always asks them to leave off the tomato. But he will eat a home grown tomato right off the vine. IMO, there is a huge difference between commercial grown hybrid tomatoes and homegrown heirloom tomatoes.

Well, I'm willing to try the homegrown ones... who knows, maybe I will like them! Even if I don't like them in slices, I know I will still enjoy them in salsa and sauce!

I think I have 8 kinds... I am not sure. This is new for me, last year I had all one kind except one cherry tomato for my DH and DS. I was buying seeds from Baker creek and there is no way to pick out just one! Or two or three......
