Tomato or potato?

It's probably a volunteer tomato plant. When you look at the odds, a seed from a potato plant, dropped from a bird, actually germinating in the garden are pretty small. The appearance resembling a potato plant could easily be explained by the growth habit of a tomato growing under cooler than normal conditions. Check the stems and undersides of the leaves for a purple color. Posting a pic would also definately help.

I'm leaning toward potato. We've had some cold (for San Diego) nights and even light touch of frost a couple of nights ago and it's still growing. I doubt a tomato plant would be that hardy. I never grew potato from seed so I don't know how much like a tomato the seedling looks. It will be interesting to see what kind of potato I get from it.

Any chance it was from a left over potato instead of a seed?

No it was definitely a seedling. I noticed when it first broke through the ground and it had cotyledons.
